That jar — and the gum in your purse, the mints in the console, the toothpaste on the sink — may contain xylitol, a sweetener that humans handle without a problem and dogs absolutely do not. Of the common kitchen toxins, xylitol is the one where the gap between "looks harmless" and "is an emergency" is widest, because the dangerous amount is genuinely small and the clock starts fast.

  • Some sugar-free peanut butters. This one deserves its own alarm. Peanut butter is the thing owners stuff pills into and smear inside toys, which means a sweetened jar gets fed to dogs on purpose, repeatedly. Read the label before any jar becomes a pill-delivery system.
  • Sugar-free baked goods and candies. Cookies, muffins, and "keto" treats from specialty brands.
  • Toothpaste and mouthwash. Never meant to be swallowed — by anyone — but dogs don't read tubes.
  • Some vitamins, supplements, and liquid medications. Chewable and liquid formulations sometimes use xylitol for palatability.

Two things not to do at home. First, don't induce vomiting on your own initiative. Emesis has a place — in a recently exposed, still-asymptomatic dog — but it's a decision for a vet to make and supervise, because the timing and the dog's condition determine whether it helps or harms. Second, don't assume activated charcoal is the safety net. Charcoal adsorbs xylitol poorly and is generally not recommended for it — a real difference from protocols for other toxins.
