Every vet infusion pump purchase eventually hits the same fork: syringe pump or volumetric? Clinics often frame it as a budget question. It isn't — it's a flow-rate question, and the two instruments barely overlap once you look at what they're actually asked to deliver through a night of hospitalization.

The core difference in one paragraph

A syringe pump drives a syringe plunger at a controlled speed, which makes it precise at very low rates — fractions of a millilitre per hour, the territory of CRIs, feline dosing, and potent drugs where a rounding error is an overdose. A volumetric pump moves fluid from a bag through a giving set, built for the litres-per-day world: maintenance fluids, shock boluses, post-op support. Ask a volumetric unit for 0.5 mL/h of fentanyl CRI and you're outside its comfort zone; ask a syringe pump to run a 30 kg dog's fluid therapy and you'll be swapping syringes all night.

What your caseload says

Giving-set compatibility. Some volumetric pumps demand proprietary sets; that's a per-litre tax forever. Know it before you buy, not at reorder time.

KVO behaviour. What happens when the set volume finishes? Keep-vein-open mode at a trickle rate buys you time; a silent stop buys you a blown catheter.

Don't forget the humans

Whichever way you go, alarm fatigue is the real enemy. Two brands of pump with two alarm philosophies in the same ward means missed alarms — the team tunes out.
