Anesthesia induction boxes look like the simplest equipment in the building — a clear chamber, a couple of ports, a lid. Then you buy one that's the wrong size and discover why sizing is the whole game: too large and induction drags while the patient panics in a fog of agent; too small and you're forcing a stressed animal into a container it physically fights.

Size to the patient, not the species list

The working rule for an induction chamber is snug but not restrictive: the animal should be able to sit and turn, and not much more. Extra air volume is dead space — it dilutes the anesthetic agent, stretches induction time, and increases the amount of gas you eventually vent into the room. For a clinic that sees everything from rats to 8 kg terriers, that means two boxes, not one universal box. A small chamber for pocket pets and cats, a mid-size for small dogs.

Four details that separate good boxes from cheap ones

Port placement. Fresh gas in low on one side, scavenge out high on the other. Agent is heavier than air; a box with both ports on the lid mixes poorly and inducts slowly.

A lid you can trust. Positive latching, not friction fit. A cat mid-excitement-phase will test it. Escaped, half-anesthetized patients are a real injury risk — for them and for you.

Material and cleanability. Clear acrylic lets you watch the patient through every stage — you're dosing to effect, and effect is visual. Seams should be smooth and solvent-safe, because this box gets disinfected daily.

Scavenging compatibility. The chamber is part of your waste-gas system. Check that the outlet fits your scavenge tubing or charcoal canister before it arrives, not after. The rest of the circuit — tubing, filters, connectors — lives in our anaesthesia consumables collection.

When not to use the box at all

Worth saying plainly: chamber induction is for patients you can't safely mask or catheterize — fractious cats, wildlife, exotics. It's not the default for a calm dog, where an IV induction is faster, smoother, and exposes the room to far less agent. If your box is your primary induction route for routine canine patients, the fix is usually workflow, not equipment.

Occupational exposure is the other quiet argument for doing this right. Every minute a patient sits in a poorly scavenged chamber, agent leaks into the workspace. Proper port design plus active scavenging keeps that exposure inside published limits — your team breathes that air all day.
